This week, most of my cognitive surplus (shout out to Clay Shirky) has gone into a new creative endeavour.
For quite some time, I’ve been toying with the idea of starting a podcast. Back in the days before Google owned YouTube, I had a channel and made quite a few talking head videos. Before I made the switch to technology, I had been training in media and communication. I’ve worked on both commercial and non-commercial radio stations as a BA (broadcast assistant).
For quite some time, I’ve been less than happy working in technology. It has been this discontent that pushed me out of software development and into scrum mastery and coaching. I am much more satisfied in these roles and enjoy working in them immensely. Watching people and learning about them is something that I’ve done so much of throughout my life that I don’t even have to think about it. Some formal training has allowed me to hone these skills, and be more respectful of the people I’m watching.
For quite some time, I’ve wondered what is wrong with me. I rarely find myself to be like anyone else in the room. I find it normal to be a different person when with different people, and I found it strange when I learned this is not normal for others. I’m a strong extrovert, yet I find it tiring to be around other people for too long. I live to serve others, yet when someone makes a request of me, I can find it nearly impossible to fulfil that request.
In the (British) spring, I will be launching a podcast called Coaching Ourselves. I’ll be interviewing neurodivergent coaches from across the globe, asking them how they came to discover their neurodiversity, coaching, and how the two interplay in both their work and play. If you would like to be a guest, please leave a comment; I would love to hear from you.
I’m currently looking for a day job also. If you know of a scrum master or agile coach role in your organisation and think I would be a good fit, I would also love to hear from you!
Thank you to all my new subscribers. It is a pleasure and joy to write for all of my subscribers, and you honour me by taking the time to read what I have to say. A special thank you to Agile Notes for actively engaging with my newsletter so frequently and promoting it. His reflections on re-reading agile texts remind me of the joy of reading them all myself.
This week I blogged about Letting the Values Guide Your Agile Transformation over on WordPress.
Sound like a really exciting endeavour and I will definitely be listening in. In this current economic climate it makes sense to diversify as much as possible and I can vouch that you have a lot to teach. The term "neurodivergent" stood out for me too, only because my wife (3rd year Counselling and Psychology degree student) uses it quite often. She will be interested to follow this podcast too.
Thank you for the shout out. I am not worthy. :) Looking forward to the podcast! Keenly interested in what you will consider/explore as "neurodivergent." (I confess, I had to look it up. And the first thing I read was that "everyone's brain develops differently.") Sorry that you are looking, too. Do you have any interest in bringing your skills to a US-based company? Understanding that the time difference is always a challenge. I am seeing a bit of activity in the healthcare vertical - specifically, insurance providers. (Again - understanding the difference between US and UK :)
